Micheal Grundmann confronts the steepness of Bohlman (photo by Ron Brunner) |
Last year, morning rains led to its cancellation, but this year, October rains blew through to leave crystal-clear skies for this year's ascent of what is arguably the most challenging long climb in the Bay area: Bohlman-On Orbit-Bohlman. 67 riders started, and 67 riders finished, an amazing turn-out on this very tough hill.
Speculation that electric-pedal hybrid would stall in a dense cloud of acrid smoke on Orbit's brutal slopes proved unfounded, as he was once again the first to the summit in an impressive time of 23:30.
In the women's division, Anny Henry of CRC was back, and is 3/3 in her Low-Key career, reaching the top in 0:00. Second and third went to Irene Franklin and Margie Biddick. Anny holds on to her lead in the women's overall competition.
In the men's category, another repeat, as last week's winner Tim Clark of Red Dragon finished first in 0:00, followed by Thomas Novikoff and Michael Grundmann in second and third. Yours truly didn't get a close look at any of them, as they shot out of the start at a ferocious pace, and were soon out of sight.
But these competitions were small change compared with the battle for the Endurance Award. Amy Tam showed up to the start with an impressively low gear: 30/34 w/ 650c wheels. Challenger Kwan..., whoops, I mean Chris Boardman was up to to the challenge, though, appearing with his 45 lb downhill mountain bike, smugly confident this would deliver him to the prestigious top position in the Endurance standings. Amy had an extra trick up her sleeve, though, and approaching the finish at the end of Bohlman, took a side excursion down and back up McGill Road, before crossing the finish line, victoriously strengthening her hold on the top spot.
In the team competition, Western Wheelers were tops for week 3, followed by Google and Webcor/Alto Velo.
Next up: Mount Diablo.
